Herkness was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for his leadership that day. His battalion, 2/66th Armored, was awarded a Distinguished Unit Citation for its actions during July 26–August 12, 1944. Herkness remained in command of the battalion through the battle for the Siegfried Line, the Ardennes, and the battle for Germany in 1945. He returned to civilian life after the war, and died on July 20, 1998, in Philadelphia. His son, Lindsay C. Herkness III, a senior vice president at Morgan Stanley, lost his life in the attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.
