Biosynthesis and Breakdown* 1. RING COMPOUNDS Alkaloids, defined in a limited sense, are heterocyclic nitrogen compounds, and the investigations into the mechanism leading to such ring systems have met with considerable success, particularly because of the use of isotopically labeled compounds. It has become evident that the theories of Trier (375) combined with the ingenious syntheses of Robinson (376) and of Schopf (377) under so-called physiological conditions are applicable with or without modifications to syntheses in the plant (378, 379).
